The Anticraft Samhain 2008

The first of the surprise knitting patterns is up on the Anticraft. It is for my pattern Pequenos Relojes de Arena which means Little Clocks of Sand i.e hourglasses.


I had a lot of fun with this pattern knitting it in the Neon colours and having it knitted up for me by Joeli Caparco in the bright Lorna's Laces colours.

Big thanks to Stevie of Raid Zero who did the pics and of course Jenni Gwiazdowski for modelling it and being so patient. I loved her shoes as well! We got lots of good pics, and had fun dressing her up in clothes to show off the socks in her lovely shoes. Do click on these photos to see the giant versions. You can also see in the post below, that I have given some video support to demonstrate the 2nd row of this stitch, which is not difficult but just tricky to understand in knitting abbreviations and words. Also check out the ErssieKnits channel on YouTube which demonstrates different methods of casting on, although I need to add a couple of my own which are much easier for people like me with hand problems.

The Anticraft Samhain 2008

The Samhain issue of the anticraft is up; this issue has a Dia de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) theme and I have a few things included in it.

Whilst trying to sketch different motifs for a chart, I sent some sketches to Zabet and she liked one or two very rough drawings and used one as the basis for the cover above.

This skull & cherries sketch has also been converted to knitting/crochet chart, see the Anticraft to download a copy. It could be knitted or crocheted too (thanks to microrevolt for allowing me to use their software for this). If someone knitted it up that would be really cool (No way it is going to be me though, I am just too slow to catch up on my own ideas!)



There is another chart included, Calavera Naranja (Orange Sugar Skull) based on the artwork and skulls made for dia de los muertos.


This came from a very crude sketch above, and Cindy Moore of Fitter Knitter
who is a technical illustrator and graphic designer (and miles better than me in things like Illustrator or In Design) made up a chart from it. The eye sockets are left blank to do some embroidery. I am knitting this onto an accessory which will be a surprise in the Anticraft later this month.

So, three of my knitting patterns will be included later this month, all along the same kind of lines and two are perfect for any skellie or skull lovers, one is a textured pattern of a simple nature (without skellies).


In addition to this, I have a couple of other charts perfect for the Dia de los Muertos theme. One is a little dancing skellie and top hat based on the sketch above, and the other is a repeating skulls pattern which I am using on some stockings. Both are available to download from Ravelry.

New Babies

My friend Fi has had her 2nd child. The first child Alice P, knows me as knit knit. That has been her name for me for the last 5 yrs and she is used to me knitting for her. Knowing how she has enjoyed being the only child and receiver of knitwear in this family, I couldn't knit for new brother born today without including her. I had an idea though. I have written to her and sent her the above beanie in her favourite colours. And I have enclosed beanies below in colours she is not too bothered about, and appropriate for her new tiny baby brother Tom.

The thing about knitting for new babes is that their heads are really too small and delicate for a lot of fussy designs or scratchy yarns, and the Mum's think they look gorgeous in anything but quite often don't want their babes to look too different. So, as simple as it is, the little rolled brim stockinette beanie hat really is one of the best designs they could wear at that age. It has made me feel inadequate as a designer, especially with those and my simple stockinette socks recently....people will think I am regressing!


Anyway, to make up for their simplicity, the pattern is free from Ravelry and contains a few suggestions for coloured stripes. I am sure some knitters will find the size and instructions handy and they only take an hour or two to knit (even for me). Great for using up leftovers too of course. I called them Buster Baby Beanies, short for stashbuster. The blue and Red striped one is Tommy after newborn Tom and the Rasta colours I called Bobby after Bob Marley of course!!

I was hoping to see the Anticraft patterns up today, but have just seen a post and their Samhain issue will be up on Monday October 6th.

I am off to knit another something for them, and perhaps some more easy baby stuff.

Cute Baby Ghostskulls

Tesselating Skulls

A chart of an all over pattern of repeating skulls (offset in a diagonal way like wallpaper), includes an enlarged individual chart 16 sts x 58 rows so that you can choose either the individual motif, or have a 'tile' to repeat over your garment to whatever size you like x 16sts. The overall pattern looks really good for knee highs or stockings, as the skulls coil around the legs in a diagonal line.

Back of Hols....with new patterns

I had a great break, mainly staying indoors because of the rain but away from any IT so I could just catch up on reading, but also was able to knit the odd thing or two. I thought I had made sure that the knitting I was doing was not taxing in any way, especially on the hands that needed a break. However, my partner had to point out that I was indeed overcomplicating things when he spotted me trying to twist stitches and make tiny cables on a sock where the yarn was slippery and the cable needle kept jumping down the back of the sofa. Also, I was spotted watching TV by just glancing up occasionally and then missing crucial bits. Anyway, the cabled sock is one in SWTC which is the adult companion sock to my recent baby sock with 'waves'. This uses much the same techniques, but I am not entirely convinced by the variegated yarn, I might need to choose a plainer one to show up the waves.

After getting so far with the wavy sock, I set myself a little task to design a sock but with restrictions. I was much more resourceful years ago when I had fewer choices. I was painfully aware that sock yarns (of which I have many) are a pure luxury to some, and not at all affordable. So I couldn't see many beginners wanting to invest in a luxury sock yarn until they are convinced that firstly they love making such a tight gauge object and secondly that they are prepared to make two of these things. Socks can take as long as any sweater to make!

So here is my result, a sock pattern called Simple Simons, Striped Staple Socks in Simple Stockinette (staple because they are just that, but also because the yarns came from Barnstaple!) I allowed myself to only buy from a LYS, within the Barnstaple region, and only to buy an everyday cheaper end of the market 4ply yarn. I managed to get these yarns for £2.50 per 50g, and 100g makes 1 pair of striped socks with a bit leftover.

UPDATE
Just to add, when I chose the yarn for these, I did still bear in mind that it had to be wool rich, and that less than 50% wool would just not do with regards to socks, so I agree with Kate's comments that investing all that time using a baby yarn acrylic would probably not do. However, since Fair Isle knitting is back this Autumn/Winter like a storm loads of people are bringing out pure wool 4plys that have to be affordable and many of these could be used for socks albeit slightly heavier gauged than fingering/sock yarns. I am looking forward to trying the Simple Simons with some Rialto 4ply.


I also started knitting up some Fyberspates yarns I've had for a year, but have no pics of that. My goal of making socks that I can actually wear has not been met, as I have designed one sock of each and then moved on and none was simple stockinette in only one shade of yarn which really would have been the most suitable for me!

Since I have been back, I have also been working on a little idea. I have registered Erssie Knits as a broadcast channel on YouTube and have decided I will put up video clips to support techniques, even the simple ones, for patterns I sell where words will not be suffice.

It has struck me with all the test knit nonsense and the discussion forums on Ravelry, that often knitters know the 'jargon' surrounding techniques and their terminology but fewer people can actually effectively put it into practice. It might also help with knitters who work for me, if I can get someone to video me whilst doing something, I can just say this is how I wish it to be done. I am not too pleased though that my clumsiness with my disability will be on show, but at least people might be reassured that if I can do it, they can too. Can't wait to show some before and after shots with finishing and blocking or perhaps show how to take an average gauge!!
